Valerie started Planting Speech LLP in 2016 so that she can provide personalised therapy for individuals with stuttering and aphasia.
Experience with Stuttering
Valerie has extensive experience working with people who stutter, and uses many approaches to treat stuttering. She has treated numerous children and adults who stutter using the Lidcombe Program, Camperdown Program, Smooth Speech Program, and Westmead Program. Valerie provides bilingual stuttering therapy (English and Mandarin) to individuals from Singapore and China in clinic and/or via webcam. She lectures and gives skills classes for stuttering at the Master of Speech Pathology Program, National University of Singapore.
Valerie is a Lidcombe Program Training Consortium member. She conducts the Lidcombe Program workshops both locally and internationally, and has trained Speech Therapists from Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Dubai, and Australia to deliver the Lidcombe Program. Valerie has a special interest in bilingual stuttering, and regularly presents her research findings at international conferences.
Experience with Aphasia
(and other Speech Disorders following Stroke)
Valerie is an experienced clinician-researcher in aphasia (language disorder after stroke), and has treated many patients with aphasia, dysarthria, and apraxia. She set up the specialised Adult Speech-Language service at the Singapore General Hospital and has trained and mentored many Speech Therapists in this subspecialty.
Valerie is the lead author and co-developer of the English and Mandarin version of the Singapore General Aphasia Test (SGAT), a locally normed test for diagnosing language disorders in individuals following stroke. Valerie has a special interest in bilingual aphasia and in helping young stroke survivors re-enter the workforce.
